Food

Protecting North America’s waterways starts at home with the food we eat, how it is grown, packaged, and transported.  Our goal it to eat organic foods with limited amounts of packaging and transportation thoughout the North American Odyssey.

Responsibly harvesting fish and edible plants, buying organic foods from farmers' markets, and Community Supported Agriculture programs are some of the ways we plan to fuel our bodies with the 4,000 to 7,000 calories that we burn each day on the trail.

This section contains information about the food we eat on the trail as well as current information about the benefits of organic and locally grown foods.

best of green food and health graphic Of all the environmental issues to think about -- and there a lot of them -- questions concerning food and health are common to us all. We've all got to eat, and do so every day, and so questions of how we manage the environment and how the environment affects human health affect all humankind. How we will feed the world's burgeoning population? Which farmers are pushing beyond organic? Can corporate growth and products that are healthy for people and the environment ever meet in a happy place? Nothing, it seems, is so systematically and emotionally complicated as agriculture and health -- because it's not just abou...Read the full story on TreeHugger

No, the Record-Setting April Heatwave April Doesn't Prove Global Warming. But . . .

Print PDF
SCORECARD-cliamte.jpg If you happened to be in part of the country that was hit by it, you sure noticed the warmer-than-usual temps caused by the April heat wave. It caused meteorologists across the country to ask if it was "July in April" and even got a few to mention global warming! But hold on--I am not about to suggest that a single hotter-than-usual week is evidence that the entire planet is experiencing global warming. That would be ridiculous, and that would be the same logic climate deniers use when it snows more than usual. In January. But with the high temp...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Green LED Could Mean a Lighting Revolution

Print PDF
green LED tabletop layout photo Red light emitting diodes were easy, and have been around for a while. Blue LEDs were harder; Shuji Nakamura won the million euro Millenium Technology Prize for figuring them out. Green LEDs have been tougher still. To get a good white light you need to mix all three, so designers have relied on a work-around, firing blue LEDs at a phosphor that emits green light, much like the ultraviolet light from mercury vapour excites the phosphors in a fluorescent light. (Mike has shown a couple of Read the full story on TreeHugger
