We had a short 12 mile paddle from Hammonasset Beach to Branford. It had rained all night, but the rain held off once we were on the water. The sky stayed gray and the weather was warm. The shoreline was similar to what we had seen the day before: beaches, rocks and houses. It changed when we reached the Thimble Islands. Granite rocks and islands rose up out of the water, reminding us of home and the Boundary Waters. The main difference was that houses were on every sizable island. A Great Blue Heron was perched in a pine tree in front of one of the houses. A few minutes later, we landed in Branford and wheeled our kayaks to the house of family friends. It was a treat to go out to dinner and catch up with Nancy and Hugh.PA030616
