Montmagny

After almost a week in Vermont it felt great to hit the water this morning. Our long time friend, Kate Ford, is joining us for a few days. The current and the wind pushed us along for 18 miles to the mouth of the the South River. The river's large delta is a bird sanctuary and we saw many species of birds searching for food on the mud flats. The tide was out as we approached Montmagny. Luckily the water was just deep enough for us to paddle into town. The last two miles were very slow going through 6 inches of water and muck that stuck to the bottom of our boats. When we pulled up to the dock we were all covered in mud. Six hours later, at high tide, the water has risen almost 15 feet. The mudflats that stretched for miles a few hours ago are gone. Tonight we made a huge dinner with some of the locally grown food that we purchased in Vermont. We are happy to report that 94% of the food that we purchased in Burlington, and 100% of tonight's meal was locally grown. We owe a big thanks to Chris at Vermont Farm Tours for helping us buy local food in Burlington.
