St. John River

Print PDF
I love starting at the headwaters of a river and paddling to the ocean. When we paddled into Maine on the Saint Francis River there was just enough water to float our kayaks. After a few days of paddling we have seen many rivers the size of the Saint Francis join the Saint John River. The river grows and changes every day. Today the current slowed down and the shallow rapids that we had become use to disappeared. The banks have become muddy and we are starting to see some larger boats. We continue to see lots of wildlife, especially birds. Today we saw a giant group of mergansers. There must have been close to 50 of them scrambling along in front of our kayaks. We have never seen such a large group of mergansers before. We paddle 30 miles in 7 hours today and are camped in a beautiful grassy spot on the edge of the river, and there is a humming bird feeding on wildflowers in front of our tent. Route 1, with run from Fort Kent, Maine to Key West, Florida, follows the river valley. In about 8 months Amy and I will reach the Southern end of Route 1, I keep wondering if any of the cars driving by will follow Route 1 all the way to Florida.
