We left Scarborough just before high tide. This was shortly after the sun came up. Swell is still coming in from the southwest, but the wind is out of the northwest. The wind was basically blowing off the shore, so we were glad to no longer battle a headwind. The coastline has changed. We left the rocky islands behind and now the coastline is mostly sand beaches. There are a lot of houses lining the shore as well. We put off landing for lunch, because the swell made landing tricky. After paddling about 20 miles we decided to land in Wells. As we got closer to shore, the swell increased. Big waves crashed on both breakwaters. Surfers were out, taking advantage of these nice big waves. We didn't really want to surf in our loaded kayaks though. During a smaller set of waves, we managed to paddle in through the center of the channel. Shortly after landing we talked to several nice people who were curious about our trip. The assistant harbormaster, Charlie, took us to the grocery store and has even allowed us to stay on his lobster boat, the Susie-Q, for the night. We are so grateful to Charlie for helping us out.
